Downtrodden

I wanted to write a happy song
something to make you smile
anything to spread some happiness
and while you tell me you're happy
that never ending frown
tells me a whole different story

your arms are crossed
your gaze is heavy
your head is on my back
and you're whimpering

Then the phone rings
you tell me answer it
The girls are calling me out
and you tell me to go

I wanted to write a happy song
something to make you smile
anything to spread some happiness
and while you tell me you're happy
that never ending frown
tells me a whole different story

I smile as I stumble in
I press myself against you
I wish you'd been there
and you're walking out the door

The clock sends you to work
When I am just getting home
I ask you once more to stay
But we have bills to pay

It feels like we are always drifting
away from one another
While we live in the same place
I never get to see you at all

I spent hundreds on new clothes
I wasted my time getting pretty
frilly panties and knee high heels
have yet to meet your bedroom floor

I got myself a ring to promise
my devotion to our relationship
and when I showed it to you
you sneered at my proaction

So we spent hours at WalMart
playing Mario Kart on the Wii
waiting for the new tires
until they took the other controller

I stood beside you
cheering you on
I stood behind you
drawing my hearts

I wanted to write a happy song
something to make you smile
anything to spread some happiness
and while you tell me you're happy
that never ending frown
tells me a whole different story

One a.m. on a saturday
I am alone at the computer
in case you want to say hello
or bitch about your job

I wait for the morning
for you to come back home
for you to crawl into bed
to warm my frozen heart

Tell me what to do now
I've become a burden
the daylight is never bright
I've lost the will to shine

But Maybe

If I write a happy song
something to make you smile
I'll be able to make this out
so when you tell me you're happy
that never ending frown
will tell me a whole new story
